If you're hunting for a real Texas-style barbecue joint, make a visit to The Salt Lick Barbecue Restaurant. Opened in 1967 by Thurman Roberts Sr. and wife Hisako on the ranch where he was born, this scenic hot spot offers family-friendly service in a rustic stone and cedar building with picnic tables inside and outside. You'll find plenty of paper towels on each table for wiping off all that sauce from the open pit-smoked beef, pork, sausage and chicken barbecue. Plates come with all the fixings: coleslaw, bread, cowboy beans, pickles and potato salad. True carnivores don't want to miss the all-you-can-eat special with brisket, perfectly seasoned sausage and pork ribs so tender the meat peels easily off the bone. Or dive into the juicy turkey breast. The Salt Lick also serves some of the best house-made cobbler in town.

"In a land that prizes its barbecue, few pits are more famed than The Salt Lick."

- Gayot
