Best Greek

Named after a small fishing village on the Aegean Sea, Kokkari Estiatorio embraces centuries-old Greek and Mediterranean cooking traditions. Owned by the same partnership as the famed Evvia Estiatorio in nearby Palo Alto, the warm dining room at Kokkari Estiatorio features intricate woodwork, pottery, a fireplace and a 20-foot family-style dining table where friends, family and strangers alike dine with one another. Winning starters include grilled octopus, meatballs with olive compote, and zucchini cakes topped with mint yogurt dressing. Dinner features lamb shank with orzo and myzithra, sole with olive oil and braised greens, and halibut steak with lentil-olive salad and mushroom-artichoke spread. After the meal, diners can enjoy Greek yogurt sorbets and sip on heavy Greek coffee or a dessert wine.

Reservations suggested. Full bar. Serving lunch Mon–Fri, dinner nightly.

"Kokkari offers pricey but well-conceived Greek food (classic dishes mildly tweaked to remain consonant with seasonal California cuisine) in a comfortable, rather formal (but noisy) setting right off the Embarcadero."
