Best Mediterranean

Helping keep the national culinary compass pointed toward California/Mediterranean cuisine, Zuni Café has been keeping certain other highly lauded East Bay restaurants on their toes since opening in 1979. James Beard award-winning chef and co-owner Judy Rodgers offers her cutting-edge cooking in the quirky, multileveled eatery. A neighborhood spot through and through, national press doesn’t stop this place from flawlessly executing burger- and Caesar salad-like standards next to sublime ricotta gnocchi and a vast array of first-rate oysters. When in doubt, choose seafood. The loyal, diverse-as-San-Francisco clientele also love Rodger’s Sunday brunch — perhaps because it includes some of the city’s best Bloody Marys.

Reservations suggested. Full bar. Serving lunch and dinner Tue–Sun. Late-night Fri–Sat. Sun brunch 11 am–2:30 pm. Closed Mon.

San Francisco Chronicle: Top 100 Bay Area Restaurant, 2011

"Not just one of San Francisco's best restaurants, but world-class. Everything on the short menu is reliably superb, from the oysters to the homey desserts."
