Though most look to restaurant all-star Chez Panisse for a California cuisine prototype, many locals prefer neighborhood gem California Cafe for everyday and, often, special-occasion dining. Several locations across the country include two favorably situated South Bay spots: the historic, vine-covered Stanford Barn (a former winery) in Palo Alto, and a quaint, cozy Old Town building in Los Gatos. Chef-driven menus feature robust Asian flair, making everything from the popular Asian chicken salad to the gourmet Kobe flat iron steak with lobster tail and tempura shrimp memorable.
