In part by supplying scores of restaurants, the beloved Bread & Cie dominates the San Diego market for top-quality European-style artisan breads and baked goods. The spacious Hillcrest bakery and cafe features open views of bakers working with a four-tier, 5-ton French hearth oven. The result is at least 20 different breads a day as well as a host of pastries and other baked goods as well as hearty sandwiches, soups, cheese plates, focaccia pizzas and other light meals served in the indoor-outdoor cafe. Picks hits include French baguettes, country levain bread, black olive bread, anise and fig bread, lemon bread, banana bread, chocolate-covered macaroons, hazelnut-crusted cupcakes, chocolate croissants, scones, muffins and brownies. Specialty coffees also are in abundance.

"Owner Charles Kaufman is a former New Yorker and filmmaker, who gave Bread & Cie a sense of theater by putting bread ovens imported from France on center stage."
Fodor's Beer and wine available. Open daily for breakfast, lunch and early dinner 7 am–7 pm Mon–Fri, 7 am–6 pm Sat, 8 am–6 pm Sun.
